How to Merge PDF Files Without Uploading Them

Applications, tax documents and contracts often have to be sent as a single PDF. Many "free PDF merge" sites work by uploading your files to their servers. For documents with ID numbers, signatures or bank details, that's an unnecessary risk.

Merge PDFs in your browser

1. Open Merge PDF.
2. Drop all your PDF files at once, or add them one after another.
3. Use the up and down arrows to put the files in the order they should appear in.

Getting the page order right

Things that can go wrong

• Password-protected files. A PDF with an open password must be unlocked with that password first. PDFs that only restrict editing can often still be read and merged.
• Forms. Fillable form fields from different documents can clash if they share names. If a form is already filled in, consider flattening it (saving it as a regular PDF) before merging.
• Different page sizes. A4 and US Letter pages can sit in the same PDF without problems; they just display at different sizes.
• Bookmarks. Some mergers drop the bookmarks (outline) of the source files. Check if you rely on them.

Built-in options

• macOS: open the first PDF in Preview, show thumbnails, and drag other PDFs into the sidebar. Save when done.
• Windows: there's no built-in merge feature. "Microsoft Print to PDF" prints one document at a time and doesn't combine files.

For everything else, a local browser tool is the quickest route that doesn't hand your documents to a third party.
