About Tile & Flooring Calculator
The Tile & Flooring Calculator counts the tiles or laminate planks you need for a floor or wall. Describe the area as one or more rectangles, so L-shaped rooms are easy, and cut out spots you won't cover, such as a kitchen island or shower tray. Pick a common tile or plank size or enter your own, set the grout joint and choose the laying pattern: straight grid, offset brick bond, diagonal or herringbone. Each pattern sets a typical waste allowance for cuts, and a small to-scale preview shows how the layout looks.
Enter how many pieces or how much area a box holds and the price per box or per m² or sq ft, and the calculator shows the boxes to buy, the area you actually get and the total cost. For tiles it also estimates grout from the joint width and tile thickness, and tile adhesive from the trowel notch size, both with the number of bags and their cost. Metric and imperial units are supported, and the working steps are listed so you can check the math.
It is useful for planning a bathroom or kitchen tiling project, ordering laminate or vinyl plank flooring, or double-checking the square footage and quantities in a contractor's quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
About 10% for a straight or brick pattern, 15% for diagonal layouts and 20% for herringbone, because more tiles are cut at the edges. Add more for rooms with many corners or for fragile tiles.
How is the grout amount calculated?
With the usual manufacturer formula: (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width) × joint width × joint depth × 1.6, with sizes in millimeters, gives kilograms per square meter.
Does the tile count include the grout joint?
Yes. Each tile covers its own size plus one joint, so wider joints need slightly fewer tiles.
How many tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
With 12 × 12 in tiles, 100 sq ft takes 100 tiles before waste, or about 110 with the usual 10% allowance for a straight pattern. Larger tiles need fewer pieces: a 12 × 24 in tile covers 2 sq ft, so 50 tiles plus waste.
How much tile adhesive do I need per square meter?
It depends mainly on the trowel notch: roughly 1.6 kg per m² with a 4 mm notch for mosaics, up to about 5 kg per m² with a 12 mm notch for large-format tiles. The adhesive's data sheet gives the exact figure for your product.
