Running Pace Calculator
Work out running pace, finish time or distance, with splits and speed for any race.
How to use the Running Pace Calculator
- 1Choose whether to solve for pace, finish time or distance.
- 2Enter the other two values, or pick a race distance.
- 3Read your pace, speed, race times and the split table.
About Running Pace Calculator
The Running Pace Calculator solves the classic runner's triangle: enter any two of distance, time and pace and it works out the third. Distances can be typed in kilometers or miles, or set with one click to a 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.0975 km) or marathon (42.195 km). Times are entered as hours, minutes and seconds, such as 1:45:00, and pace as minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile.
Every result shows the pace in both min/km and min/mi, the speed in km/h and mph, and the distance in the other unit. A second panel lists the finish times for 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at the same pace, and a split table shows the time for every kilometer or mile and the running total, which you can copy as a pace band for race day. When you switch between solving for pace, time or distance, the last result is carried over so you can compare scenarios quickly.
Runners use it to set a target pace for a race, to check what finish time a training pace leads to, to convert a treadmill speed into a pace, and to plan even splits. For training intensity, pair it with the Heart Rate Zone Calculator; for drinking on long runs, see the Water Intake Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is running pace calculated?
Pace is time divided by distance. 50 minutes for 10 km is 50 ÷ 10 = 5 minutes per kilometer, which is 8:03 per mile because one mile is 1.609344 km.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by the pace in minutes. A pace of 5:00 per kilometer is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h; a pace of 8:00 per mile is 7.5 mph.
What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?
A marathon is 42.195 km, so 4 hours means 5:41 per kilometer or 9:09 per mile on average. Most runners aim slightly faster to leave room for water stops and the last kilometers.
How long is a half marathon?
A half marathon is 21.0975 km or 13.1 miles, exactly half of the 42.195 km (26.2 miles) marathon distance.
