URL Encoder & Decoder
Percent-encode or decode URLs and query strings, and edit every URL part in a table.
How to use the URL Encoder & Decoder
- 1Paste text or a URL and choose Encode or Decode.
- 2Pick what you are encoding for: one query value, a whole URL, form data or strict RFC 3986.
- 3Switch to the URL parser to split a link into scheme, host, path, query parameters and fragment, and edit any part.
About URL Encoder & Decoder
The URL Encoder & Decoder percent-encodes text for use in links and decodes encoded URLs back to readable text. You choose what you are encoding for: a single query value, a complete URL, HTML form data where spaces become +, or strict RFC 3986. Options cover lowercase hex digits, keeping existing %XX escapes to avoid double encoding, and processing a list one line at a time.
When decoding, the tool can treat + as a space, undo double or triple encoding such as %2520, and keep malformed escapes instead of stopping with an error. Besides UTF-8 it reads the legacy Windows-1252 encoding that very old sites used. A second mode works as a URL parser: it splits a link into scheme, user info, host, port, path, query parameters and fragment, shows internationalized domain names in readable form, and lets you edit every part in a table.
Developers use the URL decoder to read tracking links and redirect parameters, debug query strings in API calls and fix broken links with encoded spaces or umlauts. Marketers can check UTM parameters, and anyone can see what a long, encoded link actually contains.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
encodeURI is for a complete URL and keeps characters such as : / ? & = # that give the URL its structure. encodeURIComponent is for a single piece, such as one query value, and escapes those characters too, so a value containing & or = cannot break the query string.
Should spaces be %20 or +?
In paths and in most APIs a space is %20. HTML forms send application/x-www-form-urlencoded data, where a space becomes +. Choose "Form data" to encode that way, and keep "Decode + as space" on when decoding form submissions.
Why do I see %25 in my URL?
%25 is an encoded percent sign. If you see %2520, the text was encoded twice: the space became %20 and then its % became %25. Turn on "Decode repeatedly" to undo it.
What does a malformed URI error mean?
A % must be followed by two hex digits, and the decoded bytes must form valid UTF-8. The error shows the exact position. Old websites sometimes encoded with Windows-1252 (ä as %E4); switch the character set to read those.
