About Wallpaper Calculator

The Wallpaper Calculator works out how many rolls of wallpaper you need by planning the actual strips instead of just dividing the wall area. Enter the whole room or each wall, add doors and windows, and choose a roll size: European standard, wide and extra-wide rolls, US double and single rolls, or a custom width and length. For patterned paper, set the match type and the pattern repeat from the label, plus a trim allowance for cutting at the ceiling and baseboard.

Each strip is rounded up to whole pattern repeats, with half a repeat added for a half-drop match. The pieces above and below windows and above doors are packed onto the rolls together with the full-height strips, and a cut plan shows what comes from each roll. You also see the strip length, strips per roll, wall area, cost from the price per roll and any spare rolls you add, and how the result compares with a simple area-based estimate.

Use it for a single feature wall or a whole room, whether you hang the paper yourself or want to check a decorator's estimate before ordering all rolls from one batch.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Divide the wall width by the roll width to get the number of strips, then divide the roll length by the strip length (wall height plus trim, rounded up to the pattern repeat) to see how many strips one roll gives.

What does pattern repeat mean?

It is the vertical distance after which the pattern starts again. Each strip must start at the same point of the pattern, so strips are rounded up to whole repeats and large repeats waste more paper.

Should I buy an extra roll?

It is a good idea for repairs later. Buy all rolls with the same batch number, since different batches can differ slightly in color.

What is the difference between straight match and half-drop match?

With a straight match the pattern lines up across neighboring strips at the same height. With a half-drop (offset) match every other strip is shifted by half a repeat, which usually makes each strip a little longer and wastes more paper.

How big is a standard roll of wallpaper?

A European standard roll is 0.53 m wide and 10.05 m long, about 5.3 m². In the US wallpaper is often priced per single roll but sold as double rolls, typically about 20.5 in × 33 ft, or roughly 56 sq ft.
