Audio Compressor

Make audio files smaller with the right bitrate, channels and format.

How to use the Audio Compressor

  1. 1Drop an audio file or a video.
  2. 2Pick a preset, or set format, bitrate, channels and sample rate yourself. You can also enter a maximum file size.
  3. 3Compress, compare the sizes and download the smaller file.

About Audio Compressor

Audio Compressor reduces the file size of audio by re-encoding it at a lower bitrate, with fewer channels or at a lower sample rate. It reads MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG and the sound of video files, and writes MP3, M4A (AAC) or OGG (Opus). Presets cover the common cases, from Smallest (Opus at 24 kbps mono, for voice) and Podcast (MP3 at 64 kbps mono) to Balanced (MP3 at 128 kbps) and High quality (AAC at 192 kbps).

If you need to compress an MP3 or WAV file for a specific limit, such as an email attachment or an upload form, enter a maximum file size instead: the tool picks the highest bitrate that still fits the length of the recording. The expected size is estimated before you start, and afterwards you can listen to the result and compare the old and new file sizes.

It is useful for shrinking voice memos, lectures and interviews, sending recordings by email or messenger, and saving space on a phone. Converting an uncompressed WAV recording usually gives the biggest saving, while a file that already uses a low bitrate has little room left to shrink. Note that this audio compressor changes the file size, not the dynamics of the sound.

Frequently asked questions

Which bitrate should I choose?

Speech sounds clear at 32–64 kbps, especially in mono. Music needs about 128 kbps for MP3 and a little less for AAC or Opus; 192 kbps and up is hard to tell from the original.

Why doesn't my file get smaller?

If the file already uses a low bitrate, re-encoding at the same or a higher bitrate can't shrink it. Choose a lower bitrate (in mono, speech still sounds clean at low bitrates) or use Opus, which is the most efficient format.

Is this the same as a dynamic range compressor?

No. This tool reduces the file size. To even out the volume, use the Audio Normalizer.

Can I compress audio to a specific file size?

Yes. Switch to Target size and enter the maximum size in megabytes. The tool calculates the highest bitrate that fits the duration of the recording and tells you if the target is too small even for the lowest bitrate.

  • Cut, trim and fade audio files on a zoomable waveform.

  • Even out loudness to LUFS or peak targets with a true-peak limiter.

  • Record your voice with a live level meter, then trim and save it as MP3, WAV and more.
