About Clock Reading Trainer

The Clock Reading Trainer helps children learn to tell time on an analog clock. In Read the clock mode a clock face shows a time and the child picks the right answer from four choices or types it; the wrong choices are typical mistakes, such as mixing up the hour and minute hands or being an hour off. In Set the clock mode the task is reversed: drag the hands, or use the buttons or arrow keys, until the clock shows the given time.

Five levels build up step by step: o'clock, half past, quarters, five-minute steps and any minute. Times can be shown digitally, like 3:45, or in words, like quarter to four. You can switch between the 12-hour and 24-hour clock and show or hide the hour and minute numbers on the dial, while a score and streak counter keep practice motivating.

For practice away from the screen, the trainer prints clock worksheets with 2 to 20 clocks, where children write the time, draw the hands, or both, with an optional answer key. It suits parents, early-grade teachers and anyone learning English time phrases such as quarter past and twenty to.

Frequently asked questions

In what order should children learn to tell time?

Most start with full hours (o'clock), then half past, then quarter past and quarter to, then five-minute steps and finally any minute. The levels follow that order.

How do the hands move when I drag them?

Like a real clock: moving the minute hand past 12 moves the hour hand on to the next hour. You can also focus a hand and use the arrow keys.

How does the 24-hour mode work on an analogue clock?

An analogue clock looks the same in the morning and afternoon, so the trainer shows whether it is morning, afternoon, evening or night, and answers are written like 15:45.

How do you read an analog clock?

Read the short hour hand first: it points to the hour that has just passed, or sits right on it at o'clock. Then read the long minute hand: each number on the dial stands for five minutes, so the hand on 3 means 15 minutes and on 9 means 45 minutes, also called quarter to the next hour.
