About Mental Math Trainer
The Mental Math Trainer gives you a steady stream of arithmetic questions to solve in your head: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squares, square roots and percentages, in any mix. Four levels set the difficulty, from Easy with sums up to 20 and small times tables to Expert with numbers up to 10,000 and two-digit by two-digit products. A custom level lets you set the ranges for sums, both factors and squares yourself, and negative numbers can be switched on for addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Choose a practice round with a fixed number of questions, a timed round against the clock, or endless mode. Repeat mistakes brings wrong answers back a few questions later, and automatic checking moves on the moment you type the right result. After each round you get your accuracy, average time per correct answer, best streak, answers per minute and a breakdown by question type.
The mental math trainer suits students preparing for tests without a calculator, adults keeping their arithmetic sharp, and anyone getting ready for aptitude tests where speed counts. It works with a keyboard or with an on-screen number pad on phones and tablets.
Frequently asked questions
What do the levels mean?
Easy keeps sums within 20 and small times tables. Medium uses numbers up to 100 and tables up to 12. Hard uses numbers up to 1,000 and two-digit by one-digit products. Expert uses numbers up to 10,000 and two-digit by two-digit products.
Are divisions and percentages always whole numbers?
Yes. Every division comes out even and every percentage question has a whole-number answer, so you can focus on mental strategies instead of long decimals.
Is my progress saved?
Rounds are listed for the current visit only. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
How can I multiply two-digit numbers in my head?
Split one number into tens and ones and add the partial products: 47 × 6 = 40 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 240 + 42 = 282. For two two-digit numbers, do the same with the second one: 23 × 45 = 20 × 45 + 3 × 45 = 900 + 135 = 1,035.
What is a quick way to work out percentages mentally?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then build from there: 5% is half of 10%, 20% is twice 10%, and 15% is 10% plus 5%. Percentages can also be swapped around: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4.
