About Vocabulary Trainer

The Vocabulary Trainer helps you learn word lists for any language, or any pairs of terms such as definitions, capitals or abbreviations. Paste one pair per line with a tab, dash, equals sign, semicolon or comma between the sides, or import a CSV file or an Anki export. Practice in three modes: type the answer, pick it from multiple choice, or flip flashcards and say whether you knew the word. You can be asked in one direction or both.

Words are introduced in small batches and come back until you have answered each one correctly a set number of times in a row; mistakes return sooner. Answer checking is up to you: ignore case and punctuation, accept missing accents with a note, make articles optional and allow small typos depending on word length. Alternatives are written with a slash and optional parts in brackets. Buttons insert special characters, and words can be read aloud with your device's voices.

The vocabulary trainer is useful for students learning a foreign language, travelers brushing up before a trip and anyone memorizing technical terms. At the end, the hardest words are listed, so you know what to review next.

Frequently asked questions

How forgiving is the answer check?

You decide. By default upper and lower case, missing accents and punctuation are ignored and small typos are accepted, with a note showing the exact spelling. You can also make articles optional or switch to strict checking.

How do I add alternative answers?

Separate them with a slash, like to speak / to talk. Parts in brackets are optional: (to) eat accepts both eat and to eat.

How is this different from the Flashcard Generator?

The Flashcard Generator designs printable cards to cut out. The Vocabulary Trainer is for practicing on screen with typed answers, multiple choice and spaced repetition. Both read the same kind of word list.

What does spaced repetition mean here?

Each word needs a number of right answers in a row to count as learned. A correct answer pushes the word further back in the queue, a mistake brings it back after a couple of other words.

Can I practice vocabulary in both directions?

Yes. Choose Both directions and each word is asked from either side, for example Spanish to English and English to Spanish. Producing a word in the language you are learning is usually harder than recognizing it, so practicing both ways helps you actually use the words.
