How to use the Number Line Generator

  1. 1Set the start, end and step, and how many small ticks go between.
  2. 2Show labels as whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers or percentages, and add points and jumps.
  3. 3Switch to fraction bars to compare fractions, then download a PDF, PNG or SVG or print it.

About Number Line Generator

The Number Line Generator draws printable number lines and fraction bars for math lessons and worksheets. Set the start, end and step, including fractional steps such as 1/4 or 0.5, and add small ticks between the labeled ones. Labels can be whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers or percentages, on every tick or only on some, and negative numbers and arrows at the ends are supported.

Mark points as filled or open circles with their own labels, for example to show the solutions of an inequality, and draw jumps as arcs above or below the line to model counting on, addition and subtraction. In fraction bar mode, the tool stacks bars split into 1 to 24 equal parts, labeled as fractions, decimals or percentages, with chosen fractions shaded so students can compare sizes and spot equivalent fractions.

Teachers can repeat a line up to ten times on one page, add a title and a name and date line, and choose A4 or US Letter, portrait or landscape, in color or in black and gray. Download the number line as a PDF, PNG or SVG, or print it directly from the page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a fill-in worksheet?

Yes. Label only the ends or no ticks at all, repeat the line up to ten times and add a name and date line to the PDF.

How do I show fractions like 2/4 instead of 1/2?

Choose fraction labels and turn off Simplify fractions. Every tick then keeps the line's own denominator.

What are jumps for?

Jumps draw arcs between two values, as used for counting on, adding and subtracting on a number line. The label shows the difference, such as +3, unless you type your own.

What do open and filled points mean?

A filled point includes the value, an open point excludes it, as used for inequalities such as x > 3.

How do you show negative numbers on a number line?

Negative numbers lie to the left of zero, at the same distance from it as their positive counterparts, so −3 and 3 are both three steps from 0. Further left means smaller: −5 is less than −2.
