About Music Staff Paper

Music Staff Paper generates blank sheet music as a vector PDF. Choose a single five-line staff, a piano grand staff with brace and clefs, guitar tab, a staff joined with tab, chord boxes above a staff, or pages of chord boxes only. Tab staves can have 4, 5, 6 or 7 lines for bass, guitar and extended-range instruments, and chord boxes come with 4 strings for ukulele or 6 for guitar and 3 to 6 frets.

Staff size follows the traditional rastral sizes from 0 (9.2 mm) to 6 (5.5 mm), or any custom height from 4 to 16 mm. You decide how many systems go on a page, whether treble, bass or alternating clefs are printed, how many measures each line is divided into by bar lines, and the line color and weight. Paper size, margins, a title, name and date lines, page numbers and up to 50 pages per file are set like in the other paper tools.

Composers sketch ideas on manuscript paper, music teachers hand out staff paper PDFs for dictation and theory exercises, and guitar and ukulele players write down riffs, tabs and chord charts for songs they learn.

Frequently asked questions

Which staff size should I choose?

Rastral 2 (7.4 mm) is the usual size for printed music and comfortable handwriting. Choose a larger staff for beginners and children, or a smaller one to fit more systems on a page.

Can I print guitar tab with standard notation?

Yes. The “Staff + tab” system puts a five-line staff above a six-line tab staff, joined by bar lines, so you can write notes and fret numbers together.

How do the chord boxes work?

Each box shows the strings as vertical lines and the frets as horizontal lines, with a thick nut at the top and a line above for the chord name. Choose four strings for ukulele or six for guitar.

What is a grand staff?

A grand staff joins a treble staff and a bass staff with a brace and a shared bar line at the left. It is used for piano and other keyboard music; middle C sits on a ledger line between the two staves.

How do you read guitar tab?

Each line of a tab staff stands for one string, with the highest-pitched string on top and the lowest at the bottom. A number on a line tells you which fret to press on that string, and 0 means the open string.
